Reencuentro: Flavors of Reminiscence
Re-encuentro: Flavors of Reminiscence documents various elements surrounding experiences from my childhood. These include fruits, family members, customs, animals, color combinations, and patterns that were engrained deep in my memory and were rediscovered upon my return. They rekindle memories and grieve for the time lost without loved ones. After half a decade of not visiting, I went to my home country in 2021 and 2023 with the intent to reminisce upon my childhood, spend time with my grandparents, and create new memories.
This is a very personal project because these elements are specific to my family and the surrounding community. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity and the means to visit. Revisiting provokes an analysis of the components that were familiar at a point in time but have yet become strange and unfamiliar. An undertone of this project alludes at how unshared memories alienate immigrant families and individuals to their native communities, a sort of collective amnesia.
